In Memory of Kay...

In the world of the Kindred, power in some form or another appears to be the driving force behind existence. Some maintain a dominance over the political sphere, some basically control the social scene, and others achieve power more through fear and threat of physical force, either actual or perceived. Those with proper mental sensibilities, potent allies, or a decent amount of pure luck may be able to gain through a combination of the previous methods. Kay Croft was unique among the Kindred of St Louis. Depending upon who you spoke of, Kay Croft was a veritable brute, despite her less than hulking stature, whereas others thought her the more subtle schemer, despite the savage demeanor she displayed in combat.

Beginning with her more famous reputation, Kay Croft was, quite bluntly, a bad-ass. She was understood to be one of the most physically powerful Kindred in the city. Her Brujah blood allowed her access to preternatural strength, which she is said to have had in spades. She was also inhumanly fast, also due to the powers of her blood. Arkady Filitov claimed to respect her abilities even if they did not always see eye to eye. He mentioned that she was arguably the second most physically powerful Kindred in the city, his only advantages over her being his ability shrug off most applicable damage as well as his ability to sprout wicked claws from his fingertips.

Prince Chase verifies part of Arkady's claim while also giving instance of Kay's remarkable physical ability. There was an attack made against many of the Kindred around a year ago where they seemed beset with a plague of zombies. Six of foul creatures were attacking Kay Croft and Marlo Chase. Chase said that she did a good job of defending heself and managed to destroy a couple of the creatures, but she admitted that the majority of the no-longer-human beasts wre decimated by Croft. While Chase came away from the harrowing scene basically unmolested, Croft was not so lucky, however. Her strength and speed aided her in the battle, but she fell short when it came to her ability to withstand the damage inflicted upon her. When the rogue, Bukowski later appeared, he took a look at Marlo and Kay and said referred to the Ventrue once again doing all the work.

Jayson Rilux shares several things in common with Ms Croft. He is a potent Brujah in his own right, and he had once been the Primogen of the Brujah clan as well. He respected Kay's ability immensely, stating with disbelief that she had bested him once in a sparring match in a club in St Louis - he did not elaborate further, but one could only hope that the place was already closed if not abandoned. Jayson would not be among those to totally count himself among those in Kay's corner, however. While he called her a competent primogen and an admirable Brujah, he spoke of her being too caught up in the politics of the Camarilla. He implied that she had gone "soft" to some extent.

Of course, since Kay had taken the mantle of responsibility of the clan, her priorities had likely shifted from the fun-loving rebel to that of the more maternal figure. In all likelihood, Jayson may be a little upset with his Primogen for her getting away with something he did not. Eva Jentre spoke of a night where some of today's more prominent Kindred had once stolen Prince Chase's motorcycle and lead Arkady Filitov on a chase that landed them in East St Louis and an eventual gang-style fight with some of the wretched locale's denizens. Jayson's attempt at humor, stealing Ms Chase's car, at a later time did not meet with such humorous approval. Kay Croft and Chris Pratt, of Brujah, informed Chase of this, where she called him in public on it.

It could be that another event of Kay allegedly being soft would involve her former ghoul and childe, Ms Tara Davidson. The woman was an ally and companion of Kay's for months before Embrace. Afterwards, she continued on, learning of the Camarilla and Brujah until she felt the need to depart. She was caught by the Sabbat of East St Louis and later destroyed. Kay was informed of this and took revenge upon them by leveling one of their known night-spots to the ground. Sounds soft to me.

Let us not forget Eva Jentre when considering what could have made Kay soften. Seneschal Jentre would likely be Croft's largest supporter. She states that if she were not Seneschal, the mantle could just have easily fallen to Kay, who was both capable and reasonable enough to maintain it. Jentre says that Kay had a subtlety and cunning that many of St Louis' Kindred would not accredit her with. While this may back Rilux's statement of Croft being too political, it shows even more strength on behalf of Kay, as she was both a physical machine and political force. Negativity associated with Eva or the Toreador in general may be due to a colored misconception that since the clan is often associated with art and beauty that they may lack the more vulgar abilities of combat and pain-dispending. Given Jentre's acknowledgement by Madison Kurokawa and Arkady Filitov as no slouch in the fighting arts, this idea seems null as well. Besides pretty petals, a Rose has thorns that prick. As an ally, Kay could have picked far worse than Eva Jentre.

Kay is deceased now, alas. She has fallen prey to the Sabbat, who seem content to pick off the Camarilla one by one. Until now, they have largely stuck to the lesser Kindred in terms of power. They struck a mighty blow to the Camarilla in the destruction of Kay Croft. Few Kindred on this side of the river did not at least respect Ms Croft. Many would like revenge and to see justice done. When justice comes, its blows will be equally swift and powerful.
