The Pariah of St Louis

An idiot in the pride. When I asked the most powerful Gangrel in St Louis what he thought of Casey, one of the younger, though, arguably, a voice in her own right, he stated that she was embraced among a pride of idiots by her sire, the rogue Connor. After speaking with her, she did not seem quite the idiot as much as someone that just had a horrid upbringing and was told the way of things in a manner askew from the normal. In truth, after speaking with her, I was almost disturbed by some of the similarities that I noticed between her and the Prince's childe, Jaxon Walsh.

I would expect certain readers to frown in dismay or wrinkle their nose in disgust upon reading the previous statement, but there is basis for my claims. Enter Connor.

Casey Munroe had been a student of archaeology. She'd heard of some interesting findings this way - I can only assume said findings to be of Native American origin giving the geography of the place. She had been in the area before, and the son of a dear friend of her father's, one Richard, lived in the area. Despite his being nearly 20 years her senior, the two were very close, and after her father passed on, Richard took on some paternal aspects in relationship to her. When he had asked that she come to the area, it did not seem an unreasonable request, so she decided to take advantage of some of the possibilities the area had to offer.

St Louis proved to be much more than she had bargained for. On the night of her 21st birthday, walking home from a gathering of her friends, she was accosted by something that she presumed at the time, was a demon. She was not all that far off in this assumption. The beast proved to be a vampire, a Gangrel by the name of Connor. He attacked her. The incident scarred her. She was frightened, and it was a while before she met with the creature again.

He took her and made her his childe. She was told that she was Embraced in order to strengthen his clan. He claimed to have watched her and witnessed within her some amount of inner strength that would add nicely to that of the Gangrel clan.

His Embrace of her proved to be an affront to the institution of the Camarilla. The Prince of the city, Arkady Filitov, himself a Gangrel was greatly offended that Connor would take a childe without his permission. This violated one of the Traditions, the laws of the Camarilla, in that the Prince of the city was not notified as it is by the Prince's right or gifting of the right to another that allows for the creation of another Kindred in their domain. Unfortunately, Connor was not the most informative of sires. According to Casey, she attended a Court without her sire there to account for her, and she was made to leave the place under pain of death. Given the insult that then Prince Filitov and the Camarilla received, it was not long before they banished the young Gangrel and her sire from the bounds of the city. During this time, Casey and her sire were put at odds with their clan by a Gangrel Harpy the name of Subella, who had also taken the position of Alpha - highest-ranking Gangrel in the area. At odds with Filitov and Subella and under banishment, the two retreated far outside of the city and set about making their own way - and their own family of sorts. This lead to another line of debacles. Casey began to receive increasing beatings by Connor. His abuse only seemed to heighten her desire to please him, however. Apparently, she was so desperate for his approval that she took several drastic measures. One of these was to Embrace Mord. Casey seems to be - or has been in the past - under the belief, inspired by her sire, that Gangrel are allowed some free reign in allowance to Embrace provided that the embraced would strengthen the clan. Ignoring the fact that this is a violation of the aforementioned tradition, this was also somewhat risky due to Mord being a mortal "vampire hunter." This act could ordinarily be attributed to unbelievable stupidity or a tremendous amount of bravado. In this case it seems neither. She stated quite clearly that she wished to find one that could hunt and do so well in order to assist her sire.

Needless to say, this was another thing that Connor did not seem to treasure. More beatings erupted. His ferocity grew greater. This leads me to my recognition of similarities with Casey and Jaxon Walsh. They have both seen the underside of what it is to be a vampire. Casey witnessed it through her sire's abuse, and Jaxon witnessed it through the doings of Bukowski, by all rights, an utter fiend of a Kindred. The large difference in receipt of punishment is that it is largely recognized because much of the Kindred of St Louis are aware of Jaxon's treatment, whereas Casey's wretched upbringing has been ignored. It is difficult to blame her for a lot of the things that she has done or been party to. She has demonstrated a good amount of ignorance combined with an eagerness to please that has bordered on the fanatical.

In more recent times, Casey's sire has been lost, and she refuses to say much of him, stating that the Prince of St Louis has granted her such permission, to basically ignore her affiliation with him and even deny any relation to him. It is a contradiction then, when she argues against Arkady Filitov removing her from their clan in anger. He hates her because he believes that he could have done better in making a childe. Every action that she has taken in poor judgment or due to Connor's has negatively effected the way Arkady, among others, has perceived her. Yet throughout this time, she has seen him as a mentor - again, extremely eager to please.

Casey has of late taken in a ghoul, the mortal brother of her former vampire-slaying childe. The ghoul's name is Mace and he dwells with her and those in her camp. Casey claims to have lobbied for some time to get herself and those in her care under the curtain of the Camarilla. There seems to be some success, whether this was inadvertent or just the easiest way for the Camarilla to handle the situation is anyone's guess. Pandor, one of her clan has recently been named the Scourge. She also took under her wing Cavan, who she describes as feeling maternal toward. The huge gargoyle has been placed under the Prince's protection - likely from the Tremere - and he and Casey patrol the local area together, presumably from the Sabbat.

In summation, Casey now sits on one of the lower rungs in the Camarilla. She bears a low self-esteem and considers it enough that is let to survive day-in and day-out within the boundaries of St Louis. She will declare an Embrace as Gangrel, though she will then tell you that that would depend upon who you ask, as Arkady has publicly renounced her. She will even state that long ago, Marlo Chase told her that she will forever be a Caitiff and a bastard. She is pitiable. She may be capable of more, perhaps much more, but the true pity is her acceptance of the state she is in.
